[retreat]: A Barnsley duo featuring Lyndon Scarfe (The Black Lamps // The Danse Society) and Sam Horton (Regional Creeps // The Shakamoto Investigation) have been working together for over 5 years creating noise soundscapes, field recordings and sonic noise assaults to guide you through a mental & physical journey of escapism. Now on the arrival of their debut album; a 50 minute long descent into noise, field recordings, euphoric brass, percussion, layers of spaced synths and broken dialogue that subtly creates a social commentary on current situations. You will feel familiarities, day-to-day organic repetition, while obscurities make you question your journey creating a unique transcendence into a retreat, out of reality.

"The record touches on all dynamics from extreme lo-fi to triumphant ryhtmic noise; your head will nod, you might even dance, and you might transcend into a deep sleep. Either way, [retreat]’s first record will take you on a journey that you will never forget."

On the record, there is special features from local artists / musicians who have assisted retreat. Sam Batley’s distinctive free-form dialogue on ‘One, One, One’ to Toria Garbutt’s dark ambiguous poetry in ‘Like Fingerprints’. Plus, brass players Isaac Crawford & Vladimir Vivionski help define the authentic dynamic of the tracks.

A group that I know only too well, I’ve been with them for nearly 30 years; from their Glaswegian basement origins to their current status as Arena band. My enthusiasm for their later output may have tempered somewhat as the mighty ‘Gwai evolved their sound to avoid pigeonholing, but there is nothing better than when they lay waste to a venue via the sheer euphoria of ‘Helicon 1’.
